Winter beauty

I stumbled across the most beautiful Camellia blooms today, these were almost the size of my hands, they were simply amazing.

A little Wikipedia trivia about the Camellia plant... In China the Camellia flower is know as the 'tea flower' Camellia sinensis is the variety of Camellia whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce Chinese Tea.

Poppies to brighten the day

This week I have a vase full of Poppies in my house, such a beautiful colourful happy flower.

A bit of Wikipedia trivia for the week: Ancient Egyptian doctors would have their patients eat seeds from a poppy to relieve pain. Poppy seeds contain both morphine & codeine, which are pain relieving drugs still used today.

How amazing and interesting are plants?

Baby's Breath aka Gypsophila in a blue Bison milk jar.

Baby's breath is one of those strange flowers that make you wonder where the name came from.
As a florist it's quite amusing how often people get the name wrong, I've heard Baby's Tears, Baby Goat, Goat's Tears & many other strange variations!

The botanical name actually means 'lover of chalk' which apparently describes the type of soil the plant grows in.

"The root of the Gypsophila repens is used to make the whipped-cream topping of the Turkish dessert kerebic. Boiling the root over a period of hours produces white bubbles which are collected, mixed with sugar, and mixed until it thickens to a cream."

A little trivia courtesy of Wikipedia today.
